From the Boer War and the trenches of the Western Front to Korea and Afghanistan, Indigenous Australians volunteered to serve a nation that often denied them equal rights. Despite restrictions under the 1903 Defence Act, thousands enlisted, forging friendships and experiencing equality during service that was often absent in civilian life.
